How to Customize Order Picking Equipment

Sometimes, custom products are difficult to develop when designing them on your own or with an unexperienced manufacturer. The communication from the end user and manufacturer are often lost or jumbled in the game of “telephone” among the buyer, the salesperson, the dealer, and everyone else involved. At New Age Industrial, a leading aluminum extruder and fabricator, we’ve made product customization a standard piece of our organization through flexible manufacturing. We have simplified the overall process so that communication remains solid and customizing products is easy!

When developing a new material handling business or updating a current one, not only do you need product inventory and a physical building, but you also need storage and transportation equipment such as shelves, carts, order picker platforms, put walls, ladder carts, etc. Where do you even begin to choose these items? There’s an abundance of catalogs to select items from, and you can visit countless websites to order online, but sometimes those products still don’t fit your needs perfectly. When you need a custom solution or an entire fleet of them, you need New Age Industrial.

The first step in customizing piece of equipment with us is understanding your needs. The first question we ask is, “What type of product are you handling?” Providing the dimensions, type, and shape of your products helps us to determine the proper material handling equipment needed to get the job done. Giving us the weight of these products also aids us in determining how heavy duty the equipment needs to be.  Other questions our in-house engineers ask include “What are some ergonomic factors that will allow your associates work safer and more efficiently?”, “Are you currently using order picker machines?”, “How about Robots?”, “What is your flooring like – smooth/rough, uneven thresholds?”  All these factors must be considered when designing high-quality, custom equipment.

When you contact a New Age Industrial Dealer for custom items, they will gather this information and more to fully understand your needs. If you have a simple drawing with dimensions, it makes customizing equipment even simpler for everyone involved, including you!  Once this information is received, the dealer contacts their manufacturer’s sales representative and communication opens with the rep, dealer, end user, and engineer assigned to the project. Direct communication then begins between the New Age Industrial Product Engineer and the end user, which is critical to ensure the product being designed will fit their exact needs while keeping the process as simple as possible.

The foremost experts on all New Age Industrial products are the on-site engineers. The engineer working on your project will have important questions after the initial conversation and stay in contact throughout the design process. They will create drawings based on those conversations and specific needs. Once completed, the drawings are discussed with the client and any additional changes are made. After drawings are approved, a 3D rendering will be generated for the client to sign off on. A quote is then generated for a prototype to be built, and at that point, the end user can buy one to test out or purchase them in bulk, often at a quantity discount. Sometimes needs will change, so alterations can be made to the product design before more are ordered.

The process of creating a custom piece of equipment might not be as simple as buying an existing product directly from our catalog, but overall time saved when picking and fulfilling orders, safety in ergonomics, and not having to compromise any of your wants or needs are all major benefits of total customization. New Age Industrial is the leading aluminum extruder and fabricator of storage and transportation equipment in the United States.
